Mumbai: A high-level panel led by the Union Cabinet Secretary will conduct interview of the shortlisted candidates on June 1 for the post of RBI Deputy Governor. The post will fall vacant on June 21 after MK Jain completes his extended tenure. Two different sources confirmed this while talking to Bizz Buzz, requesting anonymity.
This vacancy for the RBI Deputy Governor’s post has been reserved for a commercial banker. If sources are to be believed, five candidates have been shortlisted, including a non-executive chairman of a PSB who was with a private sector lender in his previous assignment.
The selected name from the interview will be sent to the appointments committee of the Cabinet, headed by the PM, for final approval. The RBI currently has four deputy governors - MK Jain, Michael Patra, M Rajeshwar Rao and T Rabi Sankar.
Three of five to be interview are current MDs & CEOs, one is a managing director of State Bank of India, and another - Srinivasan Varadarajan - is the non-executive chairman of Union Bank of India. Varadarajan, who was a deputy managing director in private sector lender Axis Bank, joined Union Bank on November 7, 2022.
The other four bankers are AS Rajeev, MD & CEO of Bank of Maharashtra; Soma Sankara Prasad, MD & CEO, UCO Bank; SL Jain, MD & CEO of Indian Bank; and Swaminathan J, Managing Director, State Bank of India.
